This study aims to understand how the perspective of intra-action can contribute to the analysis of relationships and women’s empowerment in rural contexts. The perspective of intra-action challenges the traditional notion of independent entities by proposing that properties and identities are generated through intra-actions and relations among elements. The findings of this study highlight intra-action as a way to understand gender dynamics and women’s empowerment in rural areas, based on key elements of the intra-action perspective: materiality and discursivity; performativity and agency. As a theoretical contribution, this work presents an understanding of empowerment as relational, through these elements, offering an approach to women’s empowerment that differs from those found in other studies. This approach shows that empowerment does not emerge from pre-constituted subjects, but rather from relationships between humans and nonhumans. In this sense, the woman is not the sole center of the process but is part of a network of elements that, through their intra-action, enable (or limit) her repositioning in society.
