University-furniture firm relationship in the Arapongas industry.
Abstract
Universities can provide learning, knowledge, innovation and skilled people for the innovative process of firms. Furthermore, the structure and type of firm, sector and country affect this process. This study sought to verify the relationship between universities and furniture companies in Arapongas for the development of innovation. For this, bibliographic research was carried out on the university-company relationship. In addition, a field study was carried out with two nearby universities that study furniture manufacturing and eleven furniture firms. To reach these two universities, two paths were used: i) survey on the website of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), specifically on the Directory of Research Groups in Brazil (DGP); and ii) consultation at universities close to the municipality of Arapongas. In the case of firms, 21 were randomly consulted, of which 11 agreed to participate. After surveying and analyzing the information with these two agents, it was observed that furniture firms are absorbing learning, capturing little knowledge transfer and are not interacting in the development of innovation with universities. Thus, it was found that there is a double difficulty for the university-firm relationship, as firms see universities as distant and these, in turn, find limitations to contribute. Also, the location of these agents, the size of the firms, the type of product manufactured and the social class served, affect interaction and innovation. However, the results presented by this study are a tool for research and guidance for future work, both for the furniture industry and for others.
