Social innovation and the silent challenges of overtourism: a study on Gramado/RS

Abstract
This article addresses the discussion of tourism as an activity that promotes development, generates employment and stimulates investment in infrastructure, but which can also negatively affect the local community. The research, of a qualitative and bibliographical nature, questions the transformations that overtourism causes in the city of Gramado, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil and its effects on the daily life of the community. The objective of the study is to analyze the implications of tourism expansion in this location, specifically in the socioeconomic and environmental contexts; in addition to exploring ways that collaborate in the management of the negative effects. As a result, the research presents social innovation as a solution, which can be applied in Gramado to manage the challenges of overtourism through new forms of governance for the tourist destination and technologies such as GIS (Geographic Information System).
