Abstract

The certification of organic products through Participatory Guarantee Systems (SPG) has been presented as a more financially accessible alternative for obtaining organic certification, but also as a means for building more sustainable agro-food systems. In this sense, the present study, through a literature review, sought to systematize the main findings reported in the scientific literature on such systems, in order to identify the main benefits, obstacles, in addition to their articulation with principles of agroecology and food security. To achieve this goal, 29 articles on the Web of Science and Scopus databases dealing with SPG were selected. The studies were analyzed using the StArt software. In general, the SPG has established itself as an alternative to third-party certification (CTP), the most used worldwide, especially in countries in the Global North. As a pioneering Brazilian initiative, the SPG has expanded to several countries in the Global South, but found legal recognition as an obstacle to its advancement. In terms of processes, CTP and SPG have similar characteristics. It is noted that the SPG has been characterized by a set of practices and knowledge articulated with the principles of agroecology, being an example of “southern epistemology”, as defended by Boaventura de Sousa Santos.
