Study engagement and self-efficacy among Biological Sciences students
Abstract
This study aims to analyze the intensity and the relationship between engagement in studies and self-efficacy among university students of Biological Sciences. Two scales were used for this purpose, the Ultrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES-S-17) and the Perceived General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSE), in a non-probabilistic sample of ninety-five students. Data processing have combined descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, hypothesis testing, and multivariate analysis configured as Multiple Linear Regression (MLR). Results showed a strong relationship between engagement and self-efficacy, showing that 58% of self-efficacy beliefs are explained by engagement in studies and that post-graduate students have greater self-efficacy and engagement when compared to students from the graduation level. The conclusions recommend bringing undergraduate and graduate courses closer together to strengthen self-efficacy, balancing personal and institutional resources and seeking to develop a challenging environment that favors engagement in studies
