Chronological evaluation of land occupation and use in rural properties that adhere to agroforestry systems

The Vale do Ribeira region, located in the south of São Paulo state and east of Paraná state, inserted in the Atlantic Forest Biome, has a great environmental and sociocultural wealth, with several traditional farming families that have adhered to agroecological agroforestry systems (AFS) for food production. This research aimed to classify, quantify and evaluate, through the elaboration of maps, the changes in the land use and land cover (LULC) of 42 rural properties (21 adherents and 21 non-adherents to AFS) in the years 2001, 2010 and 2021, located in the municipalities of Adrianópolis-PR, Barra do Turvo-SP and Bocaiúva do Sul-PR. LULC maps were prepared for the years mentioned, based on satellite images, aerial photographs and information contained in the Rural Environmental Registry (CAR). The LULC classes found (pasture, forest, agriculture, agroforestry and infrastructure) were checked in the field. In the properties that adhere to AFS, between the years 2001 and 2021, there was a significant decrease in the area occupied by pasture (-62.8%), a significant increase in the forest area (48.4%) and very significant increase in agroforestry (2,729.9%). While in properties non-adherents to AFS, during the same period, there was a significant increase in the pasture area (51.2%) and a significant decrease in the forest area (-43.7%). In this way, it was possible to verify that the adoption of AFS contributed to a significant increase in the area occupied by forest on properties that adhere to AFS and, as well as the environmental conservation and recovery of degraded areas.
